Exaud Emmanuel
Exaud is 13 years old and comes from the village of Majengo, where he lived with his mother. Exaud’s mother was very poor and could not find work. Exaud suffered in poverty, going to bed hungry and unable to attend school with other children his age.
In 2003, at the age of 8, Exaud ran to the streets of Arusha with hopes of finding work in the tourism capital of Tanzania. Instead, he slept on the cold concrete, went days without eating, and was bullied by older homeless people. He survived by begging at the city’s bus stand.
Amani’s street educators rescued Exaud and brought him to the Amani home. He is now in school and enjoys mathematics, English, and science. He looks up to the men and women at Amani who helped him and hopes to one day become a social worker to help other children like him.
