Rescuing Children. Restoring Hope. Transforming Lives.

Shukuru Philip

Shukuru is 11 years old and comes from a small village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. His father left when he was very young and Shukuru and his mother lived alone. When his mother broke the law and was sentenced to prison, Shukuru was left with no one to turn to for help.

He lived on the streets of Arusha for a year and a half, struggling to find food and a safe place to sleep. He survived by begging for food from passing tourists. Occasionally he found work as a domestic servant, but was treated poorly and paid very little.

Amani’s street educators brought Shukuru to Amani and he is now optimistic about his future. He’s enrolled in school for the first time in the past 3 years. He loves to read in Amani’s library and dreams of one day being a businessman.
