Bahati Silvester
Bahati Silvester is 13 years old and comes from Marangu, a village on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. His mother died several years ago and when his father remarried, Bahati went to live with his new stepmother. Bahati’s stepmother did not want to raise him, and told his father that Bahati constantly misbehaved. His father began to beat Bahati and so he ran away from home.
Amani’s street educator found him just two weeks after he ran to the streets. At Amani, Bahati enjoyed learning how to read and write Swahili. His hard work in the classroom paid off in the form of good grades and an improving sense of self-esteem.
When Bahati arrived at Amani, our social workers began working closely with his father and step-mother. In June of 2009 Bahati was reunited with his family. He is currently enrolled in a public primary school where he continues to excel. Amani’s social workers will continue to visit Bahati and his family.
