Hussein Atufai
Hussein is now 14 years old. After his father died in 2006, his mother had no source of income and couldn’t afford to feed or properly clothe her son. Hussein left his home in Machame, on the southwestern side of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and began living on the streets of Moshi. Every day he struggled to survive, begging for food from tourists and scrounging for scrap metal to sell.
Amani’s Street Educator met Hussein in June 2006 and began counseling him. Hussein agreed to come live at Amani and began attending classes in the non-formal education program.
Amani’s social workers began meeting with his mother to learn how the family could be reunited. Hussein’s mother wanted him at home with her, but she couldn’t afford to send him to school. Amani offered to provide for Hussein’s school expenses to enable the family to live together.
This year, Hussein began his last year of primary school. Once he graduates he wants to go on to secondary school. “Hussein’s mother is working hard to make sure his basic needs are met, and Amani is helping to make sure the family can stay together," says Godfrey Pamphili, one of Amani’s social workers.
