Educating Kids

Providing education to street children

Amani is committed to provide an education for each child we work with, because Amani’s goal is to develop responsible and self-reliant young adults.

In Tanzania, many children face prohibitive school expenses and are often needed at home to tend to farms and livestock, resulting in only half of Tanzanian children completing primary school.

Amani supports children in local primary and secondary schools. We sponsor the education of children who live at Amani as well as the children who we have reunited with families in the community.

Moreover, since many children rescued from a life on the streets have missed considerable amounts of time in their education, it is not possible to place them in classes with children their own age who have gone to school continuously.

To ensure that our children receive the best educational opportunities, we have developed two key parts of the education of the kids:

1. In-house Education Program: Amani offers a double-speed in-house specialised education program to children at the centres; which also function as specialized ‘boarding schools’ for the former street children. The aim of this program is to help get them up to speed with their non-street peers before they are reintegrated into society and moved into continued formal education. Here, they learn to read, write and count, before they are enrolled in primary school.

The program is officially registered by the Tanzanian government and our students are able to sit for the same secondary school entrance exams as children who attend state-run schools.

2. Long-term Education Support: Following the initial phase of the in-house education program, children are offered long-term education support while they are outside of Amani, for as long as it is needed, even after reintegration with their families and communities. The support may include primary school, secondary school and University education or vocational trainings and apprenticeships.
